Group at a AoC / Charity Commission event in 2018

Join our network of over 650 Chairs, Vice Chairs, Chairs Elect, Chairs of board committees and former Chairs representing large and small charities and non-profits in the UK.

Membership gives practical knowledge, skills and support to enable Chairs to perform their roles to the highest standards of good governance. Many Chairs say that they also join in order to share their own knowledge with others and to contribute to the Association as the recognised voice of Chairs within the sector. Join us today.

Meet and learn from other Chairs

Our unique peer network brings a range of opportunities for anyone in a chairing role to come together to share experiences and learn.

Our programme of Chair-focused events includes small networking dinners, workshops and briefings in locations across England. Members get priority booking on all events.

Members also get a significant discount on our popular New Chairs' Briefing sessions. These workshops are recommended by 99% of previous attendees. Members also get a discount on Dynamic Duo workshops.

We've recently launched a series of interactive webinars which allow you to meet and learn from other Chairs, without having to travel. Chairing essentials webinars are free for members and £30 for non-members.

Chairing essentials webinars:

In August 2020, we are also launching an additional series of webinars. Chairing plus webinars will focus on specific topics which Chairs will find useful in their roles. Chairing plus webinars will cost £30 for non-members and £15 for members.

Access practical resources

As a new member, you’ll be able to access a PDF copy of A Chair’s Compass. It focuses entirely on the Chair’s perspective and the particular challenges and opportunities of the role.

Members will also be able to access a PDF copy of A Question of Balance which looks at how to forge a successful relationship with your Chief Executive.

All members gain access to resources written specifically for Chairs in our Members' Area. In 2020 we will be adding resources on finance and appraisals.

Keep up-to-date

Our monthly e-newsletter is packed with relevant news and practical resources to help you lead your board to govern effectively. We'll keep you up-to-date with sector news and best practice.

What our members say

"Chairing is a tough job and I wanted to be the best Chair I could be. For me, that meant finding other Chairs and talking honestly and openly with them about the role. AoC has helped me to do that." Angela Style, Chair of Endometriosis UK.

The role of Association of Chairs

We champion your role as a Chair of a charity or non-profit organisation. We highlight the importance of the role of Chairs to key decision-makers for example by responding to policy initiatives and consultations.

We are continually developing our offer to make sure we are supporting members in the best way. We welcome feedback and are keen to develop our services in response.

Supporting members during coronavirus

It’s been a challenging time for the charity and not-for-profit sector recently and we’ve been keen to support our members as much as we can.

We’ve moved all of our events online for the time being and we’ll be continuing to run a range of webinars and online peer surgeries. This includes weekly coronavirus online peer surgeries, which are an ideal opportunity to discuss the issues you may be facing.

We’ve also set up a resource page to help Chairs navigate through legal issues, finance, HR and governance during this challenging time, and ideas for chairing remote board meetings.

Join today

We look forward to welcoming you to the Association of Chairs membership. Annual membership costs just £50 or £100 depending on your organisation’s income.
