The Chair’s role in leading through financial uncertainty

Tuesday 4 July 2023. 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Online Workshop

Overview

Lots of charities are facing financial strain right now. Worry about finances can come to dominate everything and can really disrupt board dynamics.  When things get tough, the Chair has a crucial role to play in ensuring the board focuses on the key things. You need to work with colleagues to make sure the board has the right information and you can play a key role in calming nerves and keeping the board working together as a team.

We are piloting this new introductory session to focus on your role as Chair in time of financial uncertainty.  If you are concerned about your charity’s finances, need help marrying the activity plan with the financial strategy or feel the board are not engaging, this session is for you.

By the end of this session, you will have a basic understanding of:

  • The essentials of building a financially resilient charity
  • Key financial information your board needs to have and where to start if you don’t have this yet
  • How to lead a charity through financial uncertainty
  • And you will have identified the key financial resilience questions for your charity

What to expect

This is a 2 hour online session. It will include:

  • Presentation
  • Discussion
  • A breakout session with peers – please come prepared to share

The session will be held over the online platform, zoom and will enable you to see the speakers and other participants joining the session. There will also be an opportunity for discussion with fellow Chairs during the session including within breakout rooms, therefore we encourage you to join with your video on.

Please note this focuses on your broad  role as Chair, not on detailed financial skills like understanding charity accounts (though we will signpost you to resources that help build your financial knowledge).

This is part two of a two part series. You’ll get maximum benefit if you come to both sessions. The first part is An introduction to the Chair’s role on finance.
