Since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, charities have been there supporting those most in need – they’ve organised and distributed food, provided support to people affected by mental health issues, found safe places for those escaping domestic abuse and much more. They’ve responded to new needs created by coronavirus as well as working to meet existing needs. And it’s clear charities are going to be needed as we move out of the crisis phase to recovery and rebuilding.
At the same time, charities are under immense financial pressure. A coalition of charities, including Association of Chairs, called on the government to provide support to the charity and voluntary sector. On 8 April 2020, after five weeks of campaigning by the sector, the chancellor announced a package of support. Whilst welcome, it’s clear this is not enough.
Association of Chairs is supporting the #NeverMoreNeeded campaign which is working to highlight the contribution charities make to our society. We hope that by charities coming together to demonstrate the valuable work they do we can make the case for the additional funding the sector needs.
The #NeverMoreNeeded campaign is asking the government to:
- Recognise that existing measures do not do enough to enable charities to continue delivering essential services that have never been more needed. We ask ministers and officials to work with the charity and voluntary sector to address the medium and long-term scale of the financial challenge ahead. This is vital for ensuring that charities can continue providing critical support to those most in need.
- Ensure the distribution of funding available is speedy and efficient, and that equality and human rights are included from the outset so that we meet everyone’s needs and decision making is transparent.
- Make necessary regulatory changes to existing schemes to make them fit for purpose for charities and voluntary organisations.
Ros Oakley, Chief Executive of Association of Chairs, said: “It’s the essence of charity to create hope, solutions and opportunities. We need this now more than ever, which is why Association of Chairs is backing #NeverMoreNeeded.”
