New Chairs briefing session
Thursday 30 November 2017 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm London
CAF (Charities Aid Foundation), 10 St. Bride Street, London, EC4A 4AD

This workshop is aimed at Chairs who are new in post or about to take up the post.
The focus is on the role in practice, for example looking at preparing and chairing board meetings, working with your CEO/lead officer, as well as building a collaborative and effective governing body.
The session will also explore the leadership skills and knowledge that will make you the most effective Chair you can become – and the support that you might need.
The emphasis will be on the strengths you bring, as well as the ‘gaps’ you want to fill. And we will offer some tips that might be useful in your particular setting.
The event is free to members who also have priority booking. Non members are welcome to attend at a cost of £40.

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation): what do Chairs need to know?
Monday 27 November 2017 2:30 pm - 5:00 pm London
Friends House, 173-177 Euston Road , London , NW1 2BJ

Our guest speaker Gary Shipsey, Managing Director of Protecture, has extensive practical experience of turning information law into practice. He is co-author of the Fundraising Regulator’s guidance “Personal Information and Fundraising: Consent, Purpose and Transparency” and Chair of the IRMS Third Sector Group.

The most significant change in data protection law is now less than eight months away. How can your organisation assess whether it is GDPR-ready? This session aims to provide Chairs with the space to reflect on what they need to know and how you can help your board  to ensure appropriate governance. Issues to be explored include:

1. What is GDPR and what might the implications be for my organisation? What are the key differences resulting from the new regulations?
2. What is the significance of GDPR for Chairs and boards?
3. What role must and should trustees play and how can a Chair help trustees to be hold an overview?
4. What support is there on which boards and Chairs can draw?
5. What is out there to support our staff to manage compliance?

Discuss these and other questions with Gary Shipsey and Rowena Fielding of Protecture.

Schroders, 31 Gresham Street, London, EC2B 7QA

When the relationship between Chair and Chief Executive is strong – they are a ‘dynamic duo’ – both adding value to the organisation. When the relationship is in trouble the organisation suffers. This event explores how to balance the roles and how to bring out the best in each other by looking at the CEO/Chair relationship from both perspectives. It is an opportunity for you to hear from and share ideas with your peers. Topics that will be covered include: what does the relationship look like when it works well, practical realities and experiences from Chairs and CEOs, and how to establish and develop a supportive culture and deal with conflict.
