Past events

To give you an idea of the range of events we hold we have listed our past events below. In 2015 we hosted over 20 professional development and networking events for Chairs across the UK. Members can obtain summaries of some of these events from the members area of the website.

From #icebucketchallenge to #GivingTuesday, everyone across the charity sector seems to be talking about how social media can help them fundraise, scale up communications and manage reputation. What are the opportunities and risks and what do Chairs need to know and take action on?

In this workshop we’ll focus on the key trends that charity boards, and their Chairs, need to be aware of; advice on the governance and policy issues triggered by social media and some practical, interactive exercises. Our goal is that you will leave feeling more confident about social media and what you need to be aware of to lead your board effectively in this area.

Priority booking for members. We will admit non-members only if space is available.
Register your interest, places will be confirmed nearer the time.

The Chair’s role in a crisis
Wednesday 13 January 2016 8:30 am - 10:30 am

From time to time a Chair can find that their organisation is in serious difficulty or is moving inexorably towards a crisis, for either external or internal reasons. It could be a funding problem, a lack of executive leadership, a changing business environment, or just that necessary tough decisions have not been taken.

At such a time the Chair has a decisive leadership role to play, and their approach can make the difference between the organisation being overwhelmed by the crisis, or surviving and emerging stronger.

This session focuses on what can help you when the heat is on. It is led by AoC member Pelham Allen a highly experienced Chair, and an independent turnaround specialist. In his turnaround role, Pelham has concentrated on large people-businesses, providing robust advice or taking executive responsibility as the situation required. In 1998 he was Chief Executive of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. In 2006, Pelham was appointed Turnaround Director of University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and has since handled over twenty acute hospital restructuring assignments, as well as working with the healthcare teams of McKinsey, EY and FTI Consulting. He is currently advising several NHS Foundation Trusts on their strategy, and is also Chairman of London Cancer and of Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

This event will be of particular interest to Chairs of large charities, especially those facing major challenges or wishing to explore and increase their own preparedness.

There will be some networking time before and after this event.

New Chairs briefing session
Tuesday 15 December 2015 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

This workshop is aimed at Chairs who are new in post or about to take up the post.

The focus is on the role in practice, for example looking at preparing and chairing board meetings, working with your CEO/lead officer, as well as building a collaborative and effective governing body.

The session will also explore the leadership skills and knowledge that will make you the most effective Chair you can become – and the support that you might need.

The emphasis will be on the strengths you bring, as well as the ‘gaps’ you want to fill. And we will offer some tips that might be useful in your particular setting.

The event is free to members who also have priority booking. Non members are welcome to attend at a cost of £25.

Stephen Cook, Editor, Third Sector magazine
Wednesday 18 November 2015 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The view from the Editor’s chair.

Stephen Cook, long serving editor of Third Sector, the charity world’s flagship magazine, will take stock of what is proving to be a watershed year for the voluntary sector. He will examine the roots of the current challenges which may have been more predictable than we think. This will be an opportunity to discuss the implications for the sector’s role, standing and future direction, and how it can get back on course. In his many editorials Stephen has provided great insight, analysis and a unique perspective on the sector. We are delighted to welcome him.

Join us for dinner kindly hosted by the Punter Southall Group.

This event is for members and invited guests only.

We will be holding an evening reception to mark the launch of our latest guide for Chairs and to celebrate our second birthday.

There will be a brief address from the authors of the guide, our Chair, Ruth Lesirge and Executive Director, Ros Oakley and we will also hear from Paul Farmer, Chair of ACEVO.
